A couple of years ago, you may remember, I had a thing about fashion illustration. This was a commission for a wedding present, after the event. As the pose was already on the elegant side, I didn't have to be too inventive. Anyway, painting white on white was rather fun, Chinese White watercolour for the translucent veil, and then Zinc White gouache to pick out the folds and embroidery. Skin tone was made up of Naples Yellow, Chinese White and a spot or two of Cadmium Red Pale. Well, I think that was it, but it doesn't take too long to figure it out. With watercolour, go in thin, re-glaze as necessary, and preferably with a little gum arabic.

Or or give it it's original name, King's Weigh House Chapel. Dedicated in 1891, the immense piece of late Victorian Gothic Revival occupies a corner of Binney Street W1. Not a particular fan of the style, but you have got to admire the imagination and craftsmanship of the guys who put these things up. And, if one relishes a perspective challenge, I don't think it could be better (or worse).

On my site, I have called this The Albert Memorial. I think it's in the general direction, and when the sun is shining, you can see flashes of gold. For the past couple of years, I've concentrated on close ups of buildings, no setting or context included. But the lure of the horizon, albeit a West London one, began to beckon.

The Church of the Guardian Angels in Mile End Road needed to be included in my Point me to the Skies series just for its name alone! Also, it is a very quirky design; and I was reliably informed by a passer by who goes in the five times a day, that it is 147 years old . Anyway, this took me three goes before I felt I had it 'spire suitable'. I love the first one (top) but I wanted something a tad neater. The second effort resulted in a distorted view owing to my close proximity and having to look up at a more acute angle. And lastly, the minimal lines with a way better standing point. Close up studies are great, but remember, what ends up on your paper, is what you see.

After a couple of months umm-ing and ah-ing about it, I decided today was the day and got the paint box out. In a previous post on this drawing, I owned up to using the 'wrong sort' of paper for using only a 0.5 clutch pencil. I'd taken photos on the day, just in case, but as luck would have it, they were nowhere to be found. Sometimes, one's memory, imagination, and Google images, is a good thing.

For The South Woodford Village Gazette
Rather more organic than architecture but the rules of proportion remain the same. I drew this in pencil on site, in Waitrose, with permission, and watercolored it at home. On this one, I found that when drawing architectural pieces, I prefer buildings with quirky details, on these fish, it was making the plain ones recognisable that I enjoyed the most. In this case, the Plaice and the Squids.

Planning a solo show is an amazing experience, which lasts six months. Don't even think about doing one in less. The reason it takes so long, is that your ideas on presentation need six months to reach their optimum visual impact. You can think of everything, just not all at the same time. There will always be unforeseen circumstances and there is no point in fretting about what they might be; that's why they're called unforeseen. The thing is, be flexible, adaptive, communicative and friendly. Stay focused on what you want from your show, whether it's sales, contacts, or press, and make sure everything you do plays up to what your work is about. London Urban Sketcher's Day Out today, cloudy and a damp, seeping cold at 8ºC. Anyway, today I was going to paint, really paint, with only a minimum of light pencil lines for guidance. I even took my new pad of 425gsm NOT surface. But as usual, the lure of the 0.5 HB line proved too much. It just doesn't scan very well though.

I've gone back to using my beloved 0.5 HB Faber Castell clutch pencil. Even though I love ink, I do have a soft spot for the particular varigated line of graphite. Especially below zero.

This might only have eight pages and measure 40 x 63mm but it still took me a good two days to put together. More work than you can see here because I was setting up 10 designs; which will need to be printed on a better printer than mine. These little books are a fabulous idea, it's all in the folding, and one cut.
